Delhi's Saket court has convicted five accused in the murder case of TV journalist Soumya Vishwanathan 15 years ago.
BBC Hindi associate journalist Suchitra K Mohanty told that on 30 September 2008, Soumya Vishwanathan was shot on Nelson Mandela Road in Delhi.
He was found dead in his car the same night in Vasant Kunj area of South Delhi. He was shot in the head.
The five people who have been declared guilty by the court include the names of Ravi Kapoor, Amit Shukla, Baljeet Malik, Ajay Kumar and Ajay Sethi. He has been in jail since March 2009.
Ravi, Amit, Baljeet and Ajay Kumar were convicted under sections 302 and 34 while the fifth accused Ajay Sethi was convicted under section 411.
Saket Court's Additional Sessions Judge Ravindra Kumar Pandey will now pronounce sentence in this case on October 26.
The hearing of this case was completed on 13 October and the court had reserved its decision.
Delhi Police claimed that the motive behind Soumya's murder was robbery.
According to the police, a concrete clue in this case was found when the weapon used in the murder of IT executive Jigisha Ghosh in another case was recovered.
What happened on the night of the incident?
Soumya Swaminathan was working in the office on the night of the incident; she was quite late in preparing the report on the Malegaon and Modessa blasts. She was going from her office in Central Delhi to her home Vasant Kunj which is in South Delhi.
Just before the murder, Soumya had talked to her father on phone at 3:15 and told him that she would be reaching home soon.
Police found Soumya unconscious on the driver's seat, she was shot in the head and on reaching the hospital, doctors declared her dead.
The police registered a case of murder but till then nothing could be known about the reason for the murder or the killer.
Signs of struggle were visible in his car and a tire of his car was also punctured. Police recovered a bullet from the tube of the car.
Controversy arose over the statement of the then Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit
At that time, a controversy had arisen over the statement of then Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit in the case of Vishwanathan's murder.
Expressing grief over Soumya's murder, Dixit had said that "it is not good to show too much courage."
She had said, "People should not be so adventurous, I feel very bad thinking about her family, the investigation is still going on. She was driving alone at three in the morning in a city where there is no night time. It is not considered very safe for women to go out in the dark, I think we should take some precautions. I am really very sad."
Soumya Vishwanathan was working on the Malegaon and Madesa blasts.
