Earthquake devastates Afghanistan, death toll rises to 2,000, Taliban asks for help

At least 2000 people have been killed in the earthquake that occurred in western Afghanistan on Saturday (7 October).  It is believed that the death toll may increase further.   Earthquakes In Afghanistan: The death toll of at least 2000 people has come to light due to the earthquake that occurred in Herat province of Afghanistan yesterday.  This figure has been given by the spokesperson of the Taliban government.  Abdul Wahid Rayan, spokesman for the country's Ministry of Information and Culture, said that the death toll from the earthquake in Herat is higher than originally reported.  Appealing for immediate help, he said that about six villages have been destroyed and hundreds of civilians are buried under the debris.   An update from the UN humanitarian office said 465 houses were reported destroyed and 135 damaged.  Partners and local officials estimate the number of casualties could rise as search and rescue efforts continue amid reports of some people trapped under collapsed buildings, the UN office said.  It is noteworthy that four earthquake tremors were felt in Herat province on Saturday.
