Many parties in the state including the Punjab government expressed surprise at Agniveer not being given a guard of honour. The army personnel accompanying him also attended the funeral, the statement said.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said that his government will raise strong objection to the Center on this matter. The Chief Minister wrote on the social media platform 'X' that whatever be the policy of the Army regarding the martyrdom of Amritpal Singh, the policy of his Aam Aadmi Party government will remain the same for the martyr. The last rites were performed in Mansa, Punjab on Friday.
Let us inform that Amritpal Singh, who was serving in a battalion of Jammu and Kashmir Rifles in Poonch sector, was cremated on Friday in his native village in Mansa district of Punjab. Shiromani Akali Dal leader and former Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal said she was shocked to know that Amritpal Singh's last rites were performed without an Army guard of honour. Harsimrat Kaur said that she will seek intervention from Defense Minister Rajnath Singh in this matter. He also said that all martyred soldiers should be given military honours.
Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Waring said that it is a sad day for us because this (soldier), recruited under the Agniveer scheme, was sent back home in a private ambulance and was not given a guard of honour. He asked whether being Agniveer means that his life does not matter that much? Punjab Congress Chief asked whether we will treat Agniveers like this, differently from our other soldiers? Does the Central Government have any answer on the inhuman treatment of the martyr?
